With busy family schedules, there isn't always time for health education. However, in order to pass along healthy life habits, it is important to begin making good decisions now.

1. Take a hike

Families really bond when spending time together, especially when getting active. Take an daily walk, kick a soccer ball to each other, or turn on the radio and dance in the living room. Whatever sounds like fun to your family, the key is to just get moving together.

2. Fruit and veggie experiments

It can be easy to get into a produce rut, always choosing the same things. Try turning it into a game. Once a week, choose a new veggie or fruit to try. With a little health education, you can all learn about the delicious options available and how to prepare them, and then have fun eating them together.

3. Snack less

One of the biggest offenders of calories is the snacks we eat. By reducing the amount of snacking your family does, you can cut down on unnecessary calories. Keep in sight good options, such as a bowl of fruit or nuts on the counter, for those times you do need a little something.

4. Dinner time = family time

Dust off the dining table and break out the real dishes. Making dinner time into family time not only reserves a portion of each day to spend together and share the day's stories, but it also means you have dedicated time to prepare healthy meals together and take your time eating.

5. Adjust food portions

Take a look at the portion sizes you serve and remember that there are health education guidelines for proper amounts. The biggest section of your plate is best filled with veggies. After that, a whole grain, moderate meat portion, or a serving of dairy can round out your meal.

6. Have easy breakfast and lunch options

With crazy morning schedules, it can be too easy to choose poor options for your family's breakfast and lunch. However, eating healthy doesn't have to be time consuming. By planning a little ahead, you can have healthy things on hand to make the first two meals of the day.

7. Don't buy junk

If you don't buy junk in the first place, it won't be on hand to tempt your family later. It can be tempting to choose treats and junk food, but by making the right decisions while in the supermarket, you can help the family learn a little health education.

8. No eating in front of the television

Eating in front of the television produces the zombie effect. Everyone is mindlessly eating, with their attention on the show and not on whether or not they are full or are eating something good for them. Turn off the tube and enjoy the food you eat.

9. Tease the brain

Healthy living is just as much about taking care of your brain as it is your body. Have one night a week when the television doesn't come on and instead you all play a game together. Each week, take turns letting different family members choose what to play. Board games, card games, dominoes, checkers, puzzles, they name it, you play it.
